Fire protection lessons learnt in tunnel environments

About the Workshop

With several significant tunnel fires occurring in the last few years, the need for fire protection of rolling stock in underground structures has become greater than ever. This workshop will offer an opportunity to work through various fire investigation and protection real-life scenarios in an informal and interactive atmosphere, and is a must-attend meeting for all fire safety & engineering professionals with responsibility for rolling stock / tunnel & underground infrastructure.

Through expert analysis, global case-study experience and interactive sessions, this workshop will highlight optimum fire safety strategies and discuss how to apply the right fire safety solutions. Each session will be introduced by a “seed” paper presented by a specialist in the area, intended to initiate an informal and extensive discussion amongst delegates.

09.30   Delegate registration and coffee
10:00 SESSION 1:

Leveraging tunnel & railway vehicle design with view to achieving an optimal fire safety

  • Assessing the difference in fire protection needs and requirements for over- and underground trains
  • Pinpointing the different areas of classifications of stock to which the standards apply: surface, underground, tunnel etc.
  • Minimising design faults (both with respect to the train and the tunnel) and ensuring compatibility between rolling stock design and tunnel design.
11:00   Morning tea and coffee
11:20 SESSION 2:

If the worst-case scenario happens... effectively managing the system

  • Keeping the safety systems fully operational throughout the lifetime of the tunnel
  • Understanding and monitoring human behaviour and evacuation responses
  • Successfully integrating fire safety and evacuation strategies
  • Successfully integrating fire safety and other emergency
    response strategies
12:20 SESSION 3:

Real world Illustrations & lessons learnt on train and tunnel fire protection

  • Case studies: train fires
  • Case studies: rail fires
  • Lessons learned and future needs
13:15   General discussion with delegates
13:30   Lunch and close of workshop

About the Workshop Leader:

Martin Shipp

Martin Shipp joined BRE in 1974 and is an Associate Director in BRE Fire and Security, and Head of the BRE Centre for Fire Safety in Transport. He currently has responsibility for fire investigation, fire safety management, fire risk assessment and projects related to all aspects of transport fire safety. He has been involved with many investigations including Piper Alpha, Alexandra Palace and Windsor Castle, was a member of the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority investigation into the Channel Tunnel fire, and a member of the Railtrack investigation into Ladbroke Grove. BRE provides fire safety research, consultancy and testing services. We deal with the risks associated with all forms of transport and infrastructure, including marine, rail, road, aerospace, tunnel, stations, airports and bridges. BRE’s vast array of research and testing facilities includes an underground train carriage with driver’s cab, allowing the investigation of various aspects (particularly thermal) of train and station environments. We also have expertise on bridges, embankments and tunnels, on crime and security issues at railway stations, and much more
